Medical Gas Installer 6010 Certification
The National Inspection Testing and Certification Corporation (NITC) tests and certifies personnel in the Medical Gas, Plumbing, Pipefitting, HVACR, Fire Protection & Safety Systems, and related industries. NITC is a third-party provider of certification and is non-discriminatory in accepting applications and issuing certifications to candidates without regard to membership in any trade association or union organization and complies with all Federal and State ADA regulations.
Medical gas systems and equipment included in the ASSE Series 6000 Standard include health care facilities within the scope of NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities Code. Medical gas piping systems contain vacuum piping.
To Qualify for Medical Gas Installer Certification
Candidates must have a minimum of four years of documented practical experience in the field of installation of plumbing or mechanical systems. The completion of a minimum 32-hour training course conducted by a Medical Gas Systems Instructor certified to ASSE Standard 6050 is also a requisite.
Finally, candidates for certification are required to successfully complete a written and a practical examination covering all facets of ASSE Standard 6010, NFPA 99, and NFPA 55 with a minimum score of 77%.
A Medical Gas Installer certification candidate is an experienced individual who can demonstrate competence within their scope and will be proficient in the installation of medical gas and vacuum systems covered by the ASSE Series 6000 Standard. Installers encompass anyone who works on or installs piping or components, including brazers who assemble fabricated metal parts, using soldering iron, torch, or welding machine. A qualified Medical Gas Installer may perform these tasks alone, or by supervising other individuals.
Aside from exhibiting knowledge of product installation, a Certified Medical Gas Installer is required to have a general knowledge of the applicable laws, codes, rules, listing agencies, and all regulations from federal, state, and local authorities pertaining to medical gas and vacuum systems as well as a knowledge of product performance, system and system component testing, documenting and recording, and medical gas terminology.

Medical Gas Installer Certifications are valid for three years from the date they are issued, as long as the following requirement is maintained:
Installers shall maintain continuity of brazing per ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section IX performance qualifications (QB322).
After Certification
As a certified medical gas installer, you install and assemble gas pipes in medical facilities. Unlike routine pipe installations, you will be working with medical gas and vacuum systems. You also will evaluate existing systems that deliver oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen during surgery. Other potential duties may include ensuring clean air throughout the medical facility, providing power to surgical equipment, and managing all pipe fitting procedures.
