Requirements For Online HVAC Certifications

Over the years the HVAC industry has grown tremendously with more and more people specializing in the field to meet the increasing demand for HVAC technicians. Thanks to modern technology, HVAC systems have become quite sophisticated making it necessary for technicians who want to stay relevant in the industry to improve their skills.

Online HVAC certifications give you an edge allowing you to prove your competence and validates your knowledge as a technician. Additionally, certification helps you achieve a better salary and working condition. Most employers or clients believe that certified HVAC technicians are more reliable and trustworthy than those who are not certified.

Although certification presents numerous benefits, it doesn’t always come easy. Bear in mind that the requirements for becoming a certified technician vary from state to state.

Here is the most common path to becoming certified.

1) Get a High School Diploma

For you to excel in the HVAC profession, you need to be taught some of the basics of the job. Technicians are often expected to do well in courses like physics and mathematics. You can also choose to work or volunteer in electronics, mechanics or related fields that expose you to the fundamentals of HVAC.

2) Obtain an HVAC Certificate from an Accredited Program

HVAC technicians who are seeking certification are expected to undergo and complete a training program at an accredited trade school or community college. The training may span from 6months to 2years. It is pertinent to note that candidates in some states who have extensive experience or an apprenticeship may choose to skip the training program. However, some programs that get accreditation from notable organizations like HVAC Excellence may come with certification. Technicians who intend to become certified may receive on-the-job instruction during their training program, equipping them to work with licensed contractors. The advantage of the program is to help candidates gain practical experience which is a prerequisite for many certification exams and licenses.

3) Pass Certification Exams for Various HVAC Careers

Many agencies offer online HVAC Certifications. Technicians who want to upgrade their credentials can apply to agencies like The Refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES) who partner with The North American Technician Excellence (NATE) to host certification exams such as HVAC-R electrical, commercial air conditioning and EPA section 608. NATE supervises the “industry competency exam” and offers HVAC-R specialty certifications like HVAC performance verifier, HVAC efficiency analyst (senior level) and air distribution (AD). Apart from providing program accreditation, HVAC Excellence has employment-ready certification exams for basic refrigeration and charging procedures as well as light commercial air conditioning.

4) Obtain National and State Licensure

Getting a license from the state you want to work in is crucial. While it is true that the process and requirements for obtaining licensure vary between states, most licensing boards expect applicants to pass a state exam and require that they receive training from an accredited training school. They are also expected to be in good physical condition and may be required to have proof of work experience.
