Medical Gas Certification Update

The National Inspection Testing and Certification Corporation (NITC) tests and certifies personnel in the Medical Gas, Plumbing, Pipefitting, HVACR, Fire Protection & Safety Systems and related industries. NITC is an independent third- party provider of certification.

Since NITC’s role is vastly important to the construction industry as well as the public at large. NITC has developed processes to ensure that it practices neutrality, manages conflict of interest issues, and is objective in administering its examination and certification activities.

Certification and Testing Programs in Medical Gas

6005 Medical Gas Generalist

Eligible individuals include any person with an interest in medical gas and vacuum systems and equipment who has
successfully completed the required twenty-four (24) hours of training covering all facets of piped medical gas and medical-surgical vacuum systems.

6010 Medical Gas Installer

Installers include anyone who works on or installs piping or components, including brazers. Medical gas systems and equipment covered in the ASSE Series 6000 Standard include health care facilities within the scope of NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities Code. Medical gas piping systems also encompass vacuum piping.

6020 Medical Gas Inspector

Inspectors include any individual who inspects the installation of medical gas and vacuum distribution systems. Candidates will be employed by a governmental unit as a plumbing and/or mechanical inspector, or as an administrator of such inspector; or be a person regularly involved in the design, inspection, verification of medical gas systems or be a 6010 installer.

6030 Medical Gas Verifier

Verifiers include any individual who tests and verifies the operation of medical gas and vacuum systems. This certification is administered in accordance with the American Society of Sanitary Engineers (ASSE) Series 6000.

6040 Medical Gas Maintenance Personnel

A Medical Gas Systems Maintenance Personnel certification candidate is a qualified person who shows competence within their scope and is proficient in and experienced in the maintenance of medical gas and vacuum systems covered by the ASSE Series 6000 Standard.

6050 Medical Gas Instructor

Medical Gas Instructors train or teach installers, inspectors, verifiers, and healthcare facility maintenance personnel regarding medical gas and vacuum distribution systems. In addition to teaching experience and exhibiting knowledge of product installation, a Medical Gas Instructor must have a general knowledge of the applicable laws, codes, rules, listing agencies, and regulations from the federal, state, and local levels pertaining to medical gas and vacuum systems as well as medical gas terminology, knowledge of product performance, system and system component testing, documenting and recording.

6060 Medical Gas Designer

Eligible candidates include individuals who design medical gas systems, new or existing, including the layout, sizing and selection of equipment and piping, location of medical gas outlet/vacuum inlets and assessment of existing systems for resizing or replacement. Medical gas equipment and systems covered in NITC certification include those in health care facilities within the scope of NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities Code.
