Review and Retest

The National Inspection Testing and Certification Corporation (NITC) develops, manages, and administers Certification and Testing Programs for the Medical Gas, Plumbing, Pipefitting, HVACR, Fire Protection & Safety Systems and related industries.

If you are considering a career in Plumbing, HVAC, or Pipefitter/Steamfitter you will need to obtain certification from NITC.

Junior Level Plumbing Certification

The exam is a 100-question open book multiple choice test with 2 ½ hours allowed.

  • 25% General Knowledge of the Uniform Plumbing Code
  • 25% Sizing Drainage, Waste, and Vent Systems
  • 25% Sizing Water Supply and Distribution
  • 25% Sizing Fuel Piping

The 2015 Uniform Plumber Code book can be consulted during this examination. Candidates who do not achieve a passing score will be eligible for re-examination as soon as the next examination is scheduled.

Pipefitter Steamfitter Certification

The Pipefitter-Steamfitter certification examination consists of a closed book multiple-choice one hundred question written examination. Two and one half (2½) hours are allowed for this exam. Subject matter covered in the examination is general knowledge of pipefitting-steamfitting including:

  • 30% Hydronics & Science
  • 8% Air Conditioning/Refrigeration
  • 28% Piping Mathematics
  • 10% Welding
  • 6% Rigging
  • 10% Tools & Safety
  • 8% Pneumatics & Control

Candidates who fail to achieve a passing score will be eligible for re-examination as soon as the next examination is scheduled.

Journey Level HVAC Certification

The examination consists of a closed book multiple-choice one hundred question written examination. Two and one half (2½) hours are allowed for this examination. The test will consist of the following subject matter:

  • 20% Thermodynamics
  • 22% Electrical/Electronics
  • 12% Piping/Construction/Welding & Safety
  • 46% Hydronics/Market/Overhaul/System

Candidates who fail to achieve a passing score will be eligible for re-examination as soon as the next examination is scheduled.

Recertification

These certifications are valid for five (5) years from issuance. Recertification of these certifications can be accomplished by successfully passing a twenty-five (25) question, non-proctored, multiple choice “open book” examination within thirty days of the expiration date of certification.

The recertification test can be taken by either of two methods:

  1. For a fee of $40.00 take a computer-based recertification exam online at www.testrac.com/nitc. A Testrac ID and PIN is required. Those can easily be obtained by going to www.testrac.com/nitc and selecting STEP 2, or by contacting the NITC office. Four (4) hours are allowed for the exam and results will be provided immediately at the completion of the exam.
  2. For a fee of $49.00 take a paper-based version of the recertification exam. This exam may be mailed to a certified individual, or sent to a training agency, employer, or association to be administered. After the completed exam is returned to NITC it may take up to 30 days for the exam to be scored.
