General Test Proctor Responsibilities

A test proctor plays a crucial role in overseeing tests and examinations. Their responsibilities include verifying the applicant's identification, recording their information as per established protocols, and directing them to their assigned seats. Additionally, test proctors must inform applicants of examination policies and guidelines, such as time limits and rules regarding personal items on their desks. Importantly, test proctors are tasked with maintaining a vigilant watch over the examination room to ensure that no one engages in cheating.

An NITC Approved Proctor

Proctors, when performing their duties, are expected to adhere to all relevant laws, ordinances, and regulations. They provide their services as independent contractors to NITC and are not permitted to subcontract or assign their rights or obligations without prior written approval from NITC. Proctors also commit to upholding confidentiality and avoiding conflicts of interest. They acknowledge the importance of NITC's commitment to maintaining high standards and impartiality in its testing and certification programs to ensure fairness for all testing applicants. NITC, in complying with ANAB and ANSI standards for maintaining fairness and impartiality, has a process whereby ALL proctors MUST recuse themselves in the event they know test candidates.

Proctor Instructions

Proctor instructions may vary depending on the examination. Current instructions are sent to the proctor for each examination session. In case of questions or concerns regarding these instructions, proctors are encouraged to contact the NITC office. Instructions for walk-in candidates (Form # 720-44) are also provided to proctors for each examination session.

Proctor Procedure to Address Prohibited Behavior During Examinations

Proctors receive specific instructions on how to address prohibited behavior during examinations. This includes situations like copying answers from other candidates, engaging in prohibited discussions, using forbidden devices, or accessing restricted materials. If any suspicious behavior is observed, proctors are guided to follow these steps:

  1. Double-check suspicions and ensure the accuracy of observations.
  2. Immediately halt the candidate(s) involved and request them to move to a quiet area within the examination room, without leaving the room themselves.
  3. Following a judgment about the behavior, proctors may either permit candidates to continue the examination or terminate the process, disqualify the candidate(s), and confiscate the examination. Disqualified candidates must be informed of their disqualification due to prohibited activity.
  4. Disqualified candidate(s) have the option to challenge and appeal their disqualification by contacting NITC.
  5. Under no circumstances should a candidate engaged in prohibited behavior be allowed to complete the examination.
  6. If an examination is confiscated and a candidate is disqualified, proctors are required to document all relevant information in detail, make copies, retain a copy for themselves, and promptly submit the original report with their signature to the NITC office. Proctors should contact the NITC office by telephone on the next business day, or the same day if possible.
