The Importance of Plumbing Certification

By becoming ASSE 13010 certified an individual plumber demonstrates that they meet the minimum requirements of training and experience necessary to deliver customer service, products, systems, installation, maintenance, and documentation of plumbing systems.

Certification requires:

1. A minimum of five years of documented experience installing and maintaining plumbing systems.
2. Completion of an approved 40-hour training course.
3. Passing a 100-question written examination.

Three important reasons to hire a certified plumber over an unqualified handyman are:

1. While training requirements vary from state to state, you can be sure of one thing- a certified plumber is more qualified than an unlicensed plumber. Additionally, they’ve spent hours and hours working as apprentices to learn the best practices.
2. While a plumbing license certifies that the plumber is properly educated and trained, and it also certifies that they are legally allowed to provide plumbing services.
3. Plumbing licensure also requires a minimum general liability insurance for plumbing contractors so you don’t have to worry should something happen to your property or the contractor.

Certified installers meet the education requirements set by ANSI/ASSE Series 6000 and follow the procedures recommended by NFPA 99. Unqualified installers may not be knowledgeable of these important standards or unwilling to take the extra time and effort it involves to fully comply, leaving facilities with a medical gas system that not only violates the law but is potentially hazardous to health and life.

A certified medical gas system installer is also capable of recognizing and correcting design problems prior to installation; eliminating legal liability resulting from improperly installed piping systems, and ensuring a problem-free accreditation process.
